Uma troca improv\u00e1vel transformou uma mans\u00e3o da Gilded Age na casa nova-iorquina da Cartier, onde arquitetura, mem\u00f3ria e joalheria ainda dividem o mesmo endere\u00e7o.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

H\u00e1 convites que desaparecem depois da festa e outros que entram para a nossa hist\u00f3ria. Ainda guardo o que recebi da Cartier<\/a> , com uma ilustra\u00e7\u00e3o em relevo da mans\u00e3o da Quinta Avenida. Aquela noite marcou meus primeiros anos em Nova York. Depois da visita \u00e0 casa rec\u00e9m-restaurada, os inconfund\u00edveis Cartier grooms, com uniformes vermelhos, chap\u00e9us e luvas brancas, paravam o tr\u00e2nsito para nos conduzir ao outro lado da avenida, onde Ellie Goulding fez uma apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o surpresa. Para mim, que j\u00e1 era fascinada pelas antigas mans\u00f5es de Manhattan, aquela travessia parecia levar tamb\u00e9m a outro tempo da cidade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Gilded Age sempre exerceu esse efeito sobre mim. H\u00e1 quem caminhe pela Quinta Avenida olhando primeiro para as vitrines da Saks ou da Bergdorf Goodman; meu olhar sobe at\u00e9 as fachadas, imaginando quem viveu ali e como algumas poucas casas sobreviveram \u00e0 cidade que cresceu ao redor delas. A s\u00e9rie da HBO e as hist\u00f3rias da fam\u00edlia Astor, entre elas a de Madeleine Astor, sobrevivente do Titanic, alimentam a mesma curiosidade, mas poucas propriedades resumem aquele mundo t\u00e3o bem quanto a Cartier Mansion, na esquina da Fifth Avenue com a 52nd Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A casa neorrenascentista foi conclu\u00edda em 1905 por Robert W. Gibson para Morton F. Plant, filho do magnata ferrovi\u00e1rio Henry B. Plant. Quando o com\u00e9rcio avan\u00e7ou sobre a regi\u00e3o, Morton decidiu mudar-se para o norte. Sua segunda esposa, Maisie Plant, encantou-se ent\u00e3o com um colar de duas voltas e 128 p\u00e9rolas naturais, apresentado por Pierre Cartier. Em 1917, a joia, avaliada em cerca de um milh\u00e3o de d\u00f3lares, e mais 100 d\u00f3lares simb\u00f3licos foram dados em troca da mans\u00e3o. William Welles Bosworth adaptou os interiores, e a Cartier se instalou ali no mesmo ano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O desfecho acrescenta uma ironia perfeita. Com a difus\u00e3o das p\u00e9rolas cultivadas, as naturais perderam valor, e os dois fios de Maisie foram vendidos em 1957 por 181 mil d\u00f3lares. A casa seguiu o caminho oposto: tornou-se uma das \u00faltimas grandes mans\u00f5es da Quinta Avenida ao sul da 59th Street, recebeu o status de landmark em 1970 e entrou para o National Register of Historic Places em 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quando a visitei em 2016, a mans\u00e3o reabria depois de 30 meses de obras. Thierry W. Despont foi respons\u00e1vel pelos interiores, enquanto a Beyer Blinder Belle cuidou da arquitetura e da preserva\u00e7\u00e3o hist\u00f3rica. A reforma ampliou a \u00e1rea destinada aos clientes de 8.600 para 44.100 p\u00e9s quadrados e conectou quatro andares por uma escada central. A entrada da Quinta Avenida foi centralizada, os n\u00edveis dos pisos foram regularizados e uma enfilade passou a atravessar o t\u00e9rreo. Pain\u00e9is de carvalho foram recuperados, e 30 lustres inspirados nos originais e 35 modelos de m\u00f3veis sob medida devolveram aos sal\u00f5es uma escala residencial. Alguns desses m\u00f3veis homenageiam Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Gary Cooper e Santos-Dumont; sobre eles, o retrato de Maisie com as p\u00e9rolas preserva a origem improv\u00e1vel do endere\u00e7o. Na cobertura, um espa\u00e7o de eventos, terra\u00e7o e oficinas de joalheria completam a casa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Em 2022, Laura Gonzalez acrescentou uma nova camada, concebendo o espa\u00e7o menos uma boutique e mais um apartamento nova-iorquino. Panteras sobem pela escada sobre o carpete verde; no segundo andar, a antiga sala de m\u00fasica de Morton Plant integra uma \u00e1rea de hospitalidade com sala de jantar privativa. O terceiro re\u00fane as \u00e1reas bridal, com veludo e quartzo rosa, al\u00e9m de um sal\u00e3o cor de champanhe, enquanto o quarto abriga o atendimento ao cliente entre pain\u00e9is de marchetaria de palha inspirados em estojos antigos da Cartier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Os detalhes recompensam quem observa com calma. Uma instala\u00e7\u00e3o cer\u00e2mica de Peter Lane recria as p\u00e9rolas de Maisie como esferas suspensas; um mosaico de travertino e quartzo de B\u00e9atrice Serre une um bracelete Art D\u00e9co ao contorno do Chrysler Building. Quatro sal\u00f5es evocam as esta\u00e7\u00f5es de Nova York, uma pintura de Fran\u00e7ois Mascarello retrata dois cachorros no Central Park, com as torres do San Remo ao fundo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talvez seja por isso que continuo guardando aquele convite. A noite de 2016 foi deslumbrante, mas o que permaneceu comigo foi a sensa\u00e7\u00e3o de ter entrado em uma casa que resistiu sem virar rel\u00edquia. As p\u00e9rolas que compraram a mans\u00e3o acabaram dispersas; a hist\u00f3ria ainda mora ali, entre a escada, os sal\u00f5es e uma fachada que me faz diminuir o passo toda vez que atravesso a Quinta Avenida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
