Na primeira reforma abrangente do Frick em quase um s\u00e9culo, Annabelle Selldorf transformou o museu sem deixar que a novidade se tornasse o assunto principal.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

O problema mais dif\u00edcil de uma reforma pode ser fazer com que ningu\u00e9m pense primeiro na reforma. No Frick Collection<\/a>, onde pinturas, m\u00f3veis e esculturas continuam cercados pela atmosfera de uma resid\u00eancia, qualquer gesto ostensivo correria o risco de alterar aquilo que o museu tem de mais raro: a intimidade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quando a institui\u00e7\u00e3o reabriu na Fifth Avenue, em abril de 2025, muita coisa havia mudado. Pela primeira vez, o segundo andar da antiga casa de Henry Clay Frick foi aberto ao p\u00fablico. Surgiram um audit\u00f3rio subterr\u00e2neo com 218 lugares e novos percursos de circula\u00e7\u00e3o acess\u00edvel; galerias, espa\u00e7os de pesquisa e sistemas t\u00e9cnicos foram restaurados ou renovados. A experi\u00eancia, por\u00e9m, n\u00e3o deveria parecer uma visita a um edif\u00edcio rec\u00e9m-inaugurado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essa foi a ten\u00e7\u00e3o que coube a Annabelle Selldorf<\/a> administrar. Sua arquitetura \u00e9 frequentemente associada \u00e0 conten\u00e7\u00e3o, palavra que parece passiva at\u00e9 se compreender quantas decis\u00f5es s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rias para uma interven\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o pedir aplausos. No Frick, transformar sem apagar exigia distinguir discri\u00e7\u00e3o de timidez. O edif\u00edcio precisava mudar profundamente e, ainda assim, reconhecer a escala, a cad\u00eancia e os sil\u00eancios da casa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O conjunto nunca foi im\u00f3vel. Carr\u00e8re and Hastings conclu\u00edram a resid\u00eancia para Frick em 1914; ela se tornou museu em 1935, com a Oval Room e a East Gallery acrescentadas por John Russell Pope. Selldorf encontrou um conjunto arquitet\u00f4nico composto por interven\u00e7\u00f5es de autores e \u00e9pocas diferentes. Suas inser\u00e7\u00f5es recorrem a propor\u00e7\u00f5es, pedra, madeira, bronze e luz para estabelecer continuidade sem fingir que pertencem ao passado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O segundo andar exigiu a negocia\u00e7\u00e3o mais delicada. Os antigos aposentos privados t\u00eam tetos mais baixos, escala menor e uma rela\u00e7\u00e3o quase dom\u00e9stica com as obras. Sua abertura ampliou a \u00e1rea destinada \u00e0 exposi\u00e7\u00e3o permanente sem criar outra grande galeria e tornou a casa leg\u00edvel verticalmente. Pinturas e objetos aparecem agora em c\u00f4modos de escala mais pr\u00f3xima \u00e0 dos ambientes para os quais muitos deles foram originalmente concebidos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A circula\u00e7\u00e3o precisou ser redesenhada sem transformar o percurso em diagrama. Novas conex\u00f5es organizam o fluxo de visitantes, reduzem becos sem sa\u00edda e estendem o acesso ao elevador a \u00e1reas antes inacess\u00edveis. Uma entrada na East 70th Street organiza a chegada dos visitantes e o acesso com pedra e propor\u00e7\u00f5es compat\u00edveis com o conjunto, sem imitar 1914. A arquitetura n\u00e3o anuncia que resolveu um problema; o visitante simplesmente deixa de encontr\u00e1-lo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O audit\u00f3rio de 218 lugares oferece a demonstra\u00e7\u00e3o mais clara desse m\u00e9todo. Instalado sob o n\u00edvel da rua, amplia as possibilidades para concertos, palestras e programas sem competir com a volumetria hist\u00f3rica. Na superf\u00edcie, o jardim da 70th Street, criado por Russell Page em 1977, voltou a funcionar como paisagem enquadrada pelas janelas. A \u00e1gua, a vegeta\u00e7\u00e3o e a escala preservam um intervalo raro entre a casa e a cidade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na Frick Art Research Library, fundada por Helen Clay Frick em 1920, a sala de leitura restaurada lembra que a vida de uma cole\u00e7\u00e3o continua fora das galerias. Seus arquivos fotogr\u00e1ficos e recursos de pesquisa documentam obras, atribui\u00e7\u00f5es e proveni\u00eancias, al\u00e9m de preservar registros de objetos perdidos ou alterados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rela\u00e7\u00e3o entre arquitetura e cole\u00e7\u00e3o tornou-se ainda mais evidente durante o per\u00edodo no Frick Madison. Durante o fechamento, a cole\u00e7\u00e3o ocupou o antigo Whitney Museum de Marcel Breuer, na Madison Avenue. Nas galerias modernistas, as obras pareciam outras. O retorno confirmou que a mans\u00e3o n\u00e3o \u00e9 uma moldura neutra; sua arquitetura participa da maneira como a cole\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 percebida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9 poss\u00edvel sair do novo Frick falando de Vermeer, Bellini, Fragonard ou Goya, sem comentar elevadores, climatiza\u00e7\u00e3o ou rotas de servi\u00e7o. Isso n\u00e3o diminui a arquitetura. \u00c9 sua vit\u00f3ria. Selldorf persegue uma ambi\u00e7\u00e3o pouco fotog\u00eanica e muito mais dif\u00edcil: realizar uma transforma\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00e3o atenta ao que j\u00e1 existia que o edif\u00edcio pare\u00e7a ter encontrado uma vers\u00e3o mais clara de si mesmo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
