Will Strafford, Vice-presidente e especialista internacional s\u00eanior do departamento de mobili\u00e1rio europeu e artes decorativas da Christie's<\/a> , passa parte de seus dias deitado no ch\u00e3o de um dep\u00f3sito, olhando por baixo de m\u00f3veis, retirando gavetas e desmontando ornamentos para entender como uma pe\u00e7a foi feita. \u00c9 ali, longe do martelo e da sala cheia, que come\u00e7a boa parte do que o p\u00fablico reconhece como expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quando James Christie realizou sua primeira venda em Pall Mall, em dezembro de 1766, o cat\u00e1logo inclu\u00eda len\u00e7\u00f3is, fronhas e outros itens dom\u00e9sticos. Poucos meses depois, em mar\u00e7o de 1767, conduziu um leil\u00e3o inteiramente dedicado \u00e0 pintura, com obras atribu\u00eddas a Ticiano, Rembrandt e Poussin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christie aproximou o com\u00e9rcio de arte da vida social de St. James\u2019s e fez de seus sal\u00f5es um lugar frequentado por artistas e colecionadores. O que antes se concentrava entre aristocratas tornou-se um mercado internacional no qual a Christie\u2019s mant\u00e9m presen\u00e7a f\u00edsica em 46 pa\u00edses e atua em mais de 80 categorias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Christie\u2019s conserva registros de vendas desde 1766 e a documenta\u00e7\u00e3o revela deslocamentos de gosto e atribui\u00e7\u00e3o.
