Descoberto na \u00cdndia no s\u00e9culo XVII, o Ter esperan\u00e7a<\/a> possivelmente adornava uma est\u00e1tua do deusa Sita<\/a> antes de ser roubado. Segundo as lendas, esse ato desencadeou uma s\u00e9rie de infort\u00fanios para seus futuros propriet\u00e1rios, alimentando a fama da chamada \u201cmaldi\u00e7\u00e3o do diamante\u201d.<\/p>

O diamante foi adquirido por Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, um viajante e comerciante franc\u00eas, que o vendeu ao rei Lu\u00eds XIV em 1668. Sob a posse da realeza francesa, o Hope foi lapidado novamente, tornando-se uma pedra menor e passando a ser conhecido como "Azul Franc\u00eas". Seu tr\u00e1gico destino na guilhotina em 1793 refor\u00e7ou a cren\u00e7a de que a joia trazia infort\u00fanio. Durante os tumultos da Revolu\u00e7\u00e3o Francesa, o diamante desapareceu em 1792, juntamente com outras joias da coroa francesa.<\/p>

Em 1830, o banqueiro Henry Philip Hope adquiriu a pedra, que desde ent\u00e3o leva seu nome.
