From Dior’s dinner plates to Jonathan Anderson’s honey, the great houses would like a word about your living room.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1874, according to the house’s own history, Louis Vuitton<\/a> built a trunk for the explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza that opened into a bed. Vuitton<\/a> was still simply a trunk maker then, and the Malle Lit was equipment for expeditions, meant for nights spent far from any house at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A century and a half later, the traffic runs the other way. Houses that once dressed people for the world outside now want to furnish the world inside, from the dinner plate to the sofa to the building itself. Somewhere along the line, selling an aesthetic began to matter as much as selling a dress. If you trace how that happened, the houses seem to have moved outward from the body one room at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It began with the walls closest to the clothes. In 1947, Christian Dior<\/a> opened his first boutique, a small space called Colifichets at the foot of his staircase on avenue Montaigne, and had it lined in toile de Jouy, a print from the 18th century he adored. The scarves and jewels sold there were modest, and the room around them did most of the talking. Decades later, the same toile left the walls and landed on Dior Maison<\/a> plates. The pattern is the same: a code that once decorated the backdrop of fashion slowly becomes the product.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes what travels is a skill. In 1924, the decorator Jean-Michel Frank asked Herm\u00e8s<\/a> to upholster his armchairs and sofas, and the stitching developed for saddles was applied to club chairs. Louis Vuitton followed the same instinct almost a century later, with its own history attached. Since 2012, its Objets Nomades<\/a> collection has asked designers such as Patricia Urquiola, India Mahdavi, and the Campana brothers to turn the house’s trunk-making into hammocks, folding stools, and room screens, all of which pay homage to that bed for Brazza. Leather that once protected luggage now furnishes the room where the suitcase gets unpacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once a stitch can move onto a chair, a whole room is a short step away. Giorgio Armani<\/a> took that step with unusual conviction. He opened Armani\/Casa<\/a> in Milan in 2000 with the goal of creating “the complete concept of an Armani lifestyle,” refined it in his own houses in Saint-Tropez and Pantelleria, and eventually brought it to Madison Avenue, where his flagship opened in late 2024 with a restaurant and ten residences upstairs. Dior had pursued something similar in private at La Colle Noire, his house in Provence, where he set out to invent an art of living, in the words of the architect who later restored it. Armani made that ambition available by the square foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a house can already sell you the apartment, what remains is the life you lead inside it, and that is where the most interesting work is happening now. In July 2025, Jonathan Anderson paused JW Anderson<\/a>‘s runway shows and turned the label into a lifestyle brand stocked with things he loves, many made by other people, from Lucie Rie mugs to honey from the Houghton Hall estate. His rule is “things that I either want to wear or want to live with,” so the label now sells his eye as much as his designs. Prada carried the same instinct into ritual this April, when the artist Theaster Gates set up a room at a new Prada Home<\/a> space in Milan with Japanese tea bowls, his own antique cabinet and a record player, and the house presented the bowls as objects meant to be handled and used over time. In both cases, the object is the smallest part of the purchase. What comes with it is someone else’s idea of a good afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That, perhaps, is the real prize. A dress comes out a few times a season. A plate, a chair, or a tea bowl gets picked up every day for years, often without a second thought. When a house sells you one of those, it is asking for a place in your routine, which is a much more intimate thing to hold than a spot in your closet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brazza’s bed, meanwhile, is back. Nicolas Ghesqui\u00e8re and Pharrell Williams have each reimagined the Malle Lit, and a Monogram version starts at around \u20ac160,000. Louis Vuitton now describes it as ideal for use as “a supplementary bed or daybed in the living room.” After 150 years of travel, the trunk has come home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
