Before her name became the name of a fashion house,\u00a0 the way Ilkyaz \u00d6zel lived was already shaping the way she created.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Ilkyaz \u00d6zel\u2019s memories, the Turkish Mediterranean comes back in intense sunlight, the scent of jasmine, tobacco, and sunscreen, cicadas in the background, and figs and olives on the table. Around her were women with striking personalities and an unmistakable femininity. One of the earliest was her grandmother, almost regal in presence, who combined dresses, jewelry, perfume, faith, and an ability to command any room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fashion came later, when Ilkyaz realized she could rarely find exactly what she wanted to wear. Eveningwear felt either too polished or so proper that it lost its sensuality. She began altering her own clothes and, when it became clear that those pieces simply did not exist, she started creating them herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where The New Arrivals enters the story, as an extension of a way of dressing that Ilkyaz had first sought for herself. Clothing was only the beginning; gradually, bags, jewelry, objects, places, and cultural encounters became part of the conversation. The brand began to feel less like a category and more like the private world of its founder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began as The New Arrivals became ILKYAZ \u00d6ZEL in 2026. The name change simply made explicit a relationship that had already existed between the brand and its founder\u2019s personal world: Istanbul and Bodrum, music, rituals, handmade objects, travel, spirituality, and a growing curiosity for everything that reveals itself slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After years of being drawn to what seduces immediately, Ilkyaz seems increasingly curious about what reveals itself over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: You grew up close to the Mediterranean. What do you remember most vividly about your childhood there, the homes, the women, the colors, the way people dressed, entertained and lived?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u00d6: What I remember most is how physical everything felt. Very strong sunlight, the smell of jasmine, tobacco and sunscreen, sound of cicadas, figs and olives on the table. The Turkish Mediterranean I grew up with was never pastel or overly romantic. It felt rawer, sexier, more layered and full of contrast. The women around me were often very strong characters, but also very feminine. As a child I never thought of any of this as an aesthetic; it was simply life around me. I understood much later how much that mixture of rawness, femininity, ritual and sensuality had shaped my own eye.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: Was there someone in your family whose sense of style or way of living fascinated you when you were young?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u00d6: My grandmother, definitely. She had a very strong, almost commanding character, but she was never masculine in the way she dressed or carried herself. She loved beautiful dresses, jewelry, perfume, all these very feminine gestures. There was something almost royal about her, in her voice, her posture, the way she carried herself though she had no connection to that kind of world. At the same time, she was very ritualistic and deeply connected to faith, so there was also this spiritual, almost superstitious side to her. I think what fascinated me was that all of these things could exist in one person: strength, elegance, sensuality, ritual, faith. It was a very rich combination to admire and be influenced from.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: Your clothes have changed the way occasion dressing feels today, glamorous and sensual, but never traditional or predictable. What did you feel was missing in eveningwear when you started designing?<\/strong>
I\u00d6: Istanbul was such a party city then, and I was going out seven days, seven nights. I could never find exactly what I wanted to wear. Eveningwear was either too polished and proper, or so safe that it lost all sexiness. I wanted something dressed-up but still cool, sensual, a little undone. So I was constantly changing the things I bought, shortening them, altering proportions, making them feel more like me. Eventually it became obvious that if I couldn\u2019t find those clothes, I should make them myself. And I think Istanbul inevitably found its way into the brand: it has this strange mix of glamour and chaos, old-world femininity and a much rawer nightlife. That tension still feels very natural to me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: What is Ilkyaz like at home, when there is nowhere to go and no occasion to dress for?<\/strong>
I\u00d6: At home I become much more instinctive. One of the things I love about Istanbul is that it gives you both extremes, a very urban, intense life, and then this almost island-like feeling. My home and balcony overlook the Bosphorus and a forest, so I\u2019m lucky to have that shift without really leaving the city. At home everything becomes more about the senses: soft fabrics on bare skin, familiar scents, small rituals. I\u2019m happiest slightly half-dressed there; to me that feels more luxurious than being fully put together. After the speed and excess of fashion, I like that private simplicity, still sensual and beautiful, but much more grounded.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: What are the things you always want around you at home? Flowers, books, art, music, candles, objects, food?<\/strong>
I\u00d6: Books, magazines and prints tend to spill everywhere in my home. I\u2019m very sensitive to atmosphere, so scent is almost architectural for me. Incense, resins and candles are always burning, mixing with the sea breeze coming in from outside. I need plants, flowers, sun and moon always reflecting around the house; things that remind me the house is part of nature, not sealed off from it. Sound works in the same way. Sometimes music completely transforms the space, and sometimes I want nothing imposed on it at all, just wind, birds, water, the small sounds of nature. And of course, my cat and my boyfriend are the real center of it all, they\u2019re what make it home rather than just a beautiful space. I think I\u2019m drawn to homes that feel sensual without trying to be seductive.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: Are you someone who loves to entertain? What does a perfect evening at your house look like?<\/strong>
I\u00d6: I actually protect my home quite a lot. I spend so much of my life in very social environments that I don\u2019t want home to become another place where I have to host or perform. If I invite people over, it\u2019s usually two or three people I\u2019m very close to, and then it becomes something much more intimate. If I want a party, I\u2019d much rather go out. Home is my cocoon, and I think keeping it that way is part of what makes it feel so personal to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: When you go to bed at night, what is usually on your bedside table?<\/strong>
I\u00d6: My bedside table is usually a small, slightly chaotic constellation of things: books and magazines left open, a candle or incense, crystals and talismans I\u2019ve collected over time, rosewater that I use almost ritualistically to purify and protect my energy, water, and whatever jewelry I\u2019ve taken off at the end of the night. I like that it isn\u2019t too composed. It feels more intimate that way; a mix of what I\u2019m reading, what I believe in, and traces of the day I\u2019ve just had.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: Are there any little objects, books, creams, candles, photographs or things beside your bed that are part of your nightly ritual?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u00d6: My nightly rituals are mostly small ways of leaving the day behind. I burn incense or resin, use rosewater almost as a cleansing gesture, take off my jewelry, open a book depending on my mood. I like sleeping with the window open when I can, feeling the night air and seeing the moon change the room. And if I\u2019m still awake around dawn, hearing the call to prayer in the distance is one of those sounds that makes me very aware of where I am. I think I\u2019m drawn to rituals that mark transitions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: Do you have a ritual before going to sleep? And when you wake up, what is the first thing you usually do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u00d6: At night I try to be conscious of the state I\u2019m leaving my mind in. I don\u2019t like ending the day with something very dark or aggressive; I\u2019d rather read or watch something that expands me, reassures me, or makes me curious about tomorrow. Then I spray rosewater, say a small prayer and let the day close. It\u2019s not a complicated ritual, but I like having a moment where I return to myself and put things back into perspective. Mornings are more instinctive. Sometimes I wake up with the sun directly on my face and it feels almost medicinal, like the day has arrived before I\u2019ve had time to think about it. Sometimes I need much more time before I want the outside world in. And sometimes I reach for my phone immediately, which is the less poetic truth. I\u2019m not interested in pretending every morning is sacred; I think the ritual is simply noticing what state I\u2019m in and letting the day begin from there.
<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: What makes your bedroom feel completely like your own space?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes my bedroom feel like mine is that nothing in it is really there for an audience. It\u2019s probably the least edited space in my life. Books, jewelry, little objects, fabrics, things with emotional or spiritual meaning can all coexist without needing to make perfect sense together. I like that it doesn\u2019t have to represent a single version of me. It can be feminine, sensual, a little chaotic, spiritual, practical, all at once. In the rest of my life I\u2019m constantly making choices, refining, editing. My bedroom is the one place where I don\u2019t have to curate myself.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: Istanbul and Bodrum both seem very present in your universe. What does each place give you personally?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u00d6: I don\u2019t think I could really separate myself from either of them.<\/em> Istanbul is home in the most complicated sense of the word. It can exhaust me, frustrate me, overwhelm me, and then suddenly I\u2019ll turn a corner or look out at the Bosphorus and remember why I could never completely leave it. There is so much life packed into it. So many different centuries, people, moods and contradictions existing on top of one another. I think growing up around that teaches you not to look for things that are too perfect or too resolved. I\u2019m much more drawn to beauty that has some tension in it, something a little strange or unexpected. Bodrum is where I feel much more like myself. I have a very emotional connection to it. I slow down there, I think more clearly, and I become much less interested in all the unnecessary noise around things. I don\u2019t feel the same pressure to constantly be switched on or productive. I can just live a little more naturally and trust my instincts more. It is also a place where I feel very connected to my family, to memories, and to a version of myself that feels more dreamy. I think Ilkyaz Ozel sits somewhere between the two. It has Istanbul\u2019s complexity, but it also needs Bodrum\u2019s sense of freedom.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: When you travel purely for yourself, what kind of place are you drawn to? A grand hotel, a tiny house by the sea, a city full of energy, somewhere completely remote?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u00d6: I\u2019m drawn to places with a pulse and a strong point of view. It doesn\u2019t necessarily have to be luxurious, I\u2019d take a tiny hotel that feels genuinely connected to the place and its local character in the right neighborhood over a grand hotel that could be anywhere, with zero soul. I like places that feel a little raw but still have taste: good food, interesting people, local culture, a sense of discovery. The sea is always a plus, but what I really need is energy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: Is there a place in the world you keep returning to because it somehow resets you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u00d6: Ibiza. I love that it can be many completely different things in the same day. You can disappear into nature, swim, eat something incredibly simple, spend the afternoon at a farm or doing something almost spiritual and then completely change frequency at night. That contrast resets me. It never asks me to be just one version of myself.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: What do you notice first when you arrive somewhere new? The people, architecture, food, light, music, the way women dress?<\/strong>
I\u00d6: The energy, always. I know very quickly whether a place draws me in or repels me. If the vibe feels off, I don\u2019t really believe in pushing through just because it was part of the plan, I\u2019ll change course immediately. Then I notice the people, the light, the architecture, what they\u2019re wearing, what they\u2019re eating. But the first reaction is completely instinctive.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: What is always in your suitcase, no matter where you are going?<\/strong>
I\u00d6: I always pack a swimsuit, almost regardless of destination. There\u2019s something optimistic about always being prepared to swim, hotel pool, hammam, sea, somewhere unexpected. I also need something very soft and warm with me, usually cashmere or a large wrap, and I almost always travel with a hot water bottle. It\u2019s a kind of portable cocoon. I also always pack workout clothes, if there\u2019s any chance to hike, swim, or do some kind of outdoor workout while I\u2019m traveling, I\u2019ll take it. And in my everyday bag, I carry a small leather pouch with crystals and an energy-cleansing spray. It\u2019s slightly ritualistic, but I like having a few familiar things with me that can make a hotel room, a plane or a completely new city feel a little more like my own space.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LM: Outside fashion, what are you curious about right now? What are you reading, listening to, collecting or discovering?<\/strong>
I\u00d6: Right now I have Shamans by Max Carocci on my bed side and Mirabai Starr\u2019s Ordinary Mysticism in my bag, so I’m reading around ideas of ritual, belief and the sacred in everyday life. I\u2019ve also been listening to a lot of Soulwax and Portishead, very different energies, but both have this darkness and atmosphere that I keep returning to. I\u2019m increasingly curious about things that still carry the hand of the person who made them: ceramics, textiles, jewelry, old techniques, imperfect objects. Maybe because so much of what we see now is polished and reproducible, I\u2019m drawn to things that couldn\u2019t quite be made the same way twice. And I think I\u2019m discovering slowness. I used to be very drawn to the immediate, things that seduce you instantly. Now I\u2019m becoming more curious about things that reveal themselves slowly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
