The Sicilian Hotel Behind Dua Lipa’s Wedding

In Palermo, Villa Igiea brings together history, sophistication, and sweeping sea views, the setting chosen for the singer’s celebrations on the island

Overlooking the Gulf of Palermo, Villa Igiea is once again at the center of the international spotlight as one of Sicily’s most sought-after addresses. The hotel (recently chosen as the base for Dua Lipa’s wedding celebrations on the island) captures, with ease, the intersection of history, sophistication, and Mediterranean living.

Set in a landscape that once welcomed European royalty, magnates, and high society figures arriving by yacht along the Sicilian coast, Villa Igiea carries a legacy that dates back to the height of the Florio family’s influence in the late 19th century. Built in 1900, the Art Nouveau palace became one of the defining symbols of the Mediterranean Belle Époque, hosting names such as Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, and financier J.P. Morgan.

Following an extensive renovation led by Rocco Forte Hotels, the property enters a new chapter, preserving its historic character while embracing a contemporary vision of luxury. The interiors, reimagined by Olga Polizzi in collaboration with Nicholas Haslam Studios, draw from the building’s architecture and the Florio family’s lifestyle, resulting in an aesthetic that balances classic elegance with a distinctly Sicilian identity.

Donna Franca Suite

The 72 rooms and 28 suites, each individually designed, reflect this atmosphere. Handcrafted wallpaper, historic furnishings, rich textiles, and a palette inspired by the surrounding landscape-amber, hibiscus, pomegranate, and sage green-create spaces that feel both timeless and fresh. In the sea-facing suites, original 19th-century pieces sit alongside private terraces overlooking the Tyrrhenian sunset. Among them, the Donna Franca Suite stands out as the hotel’s most iconic accommodation. Spanning 144 square meters, with an additional 96-square-meter private terrace, the suite pays tribute to Donna Franca Florio, a Belle Époque icon known for her presence within Europe’s most exclusive social circles. The space brings together local artworks, carefully selected antiques, and subtle maritime references, translating the spirit of the era into a contemporary hospitality experience.

Dining further deepens the connection to local culture. At Florio restaurant, led by chef Fulvio Pierangelini, the cuisine is rooted in refined simplicity and ingredient-driven quality. Fresh seafood, raw crustaceans, handmade pastas, and traditional Sicilian dishes define a menu centered on authenticity and respect for its origins.

At Alicetta, an open-air bistro suspended between the gardens and the sea, the experience shifts to something lighter and more contemplative. Meanwhile, the Igiea Terrazza Bar invites guests into an early evening ritual, with cocktails served beneath historic arches and views over Palermo’s sunset.
